Egg–Laying Mammals

The spiny anteaters are more properly known as echidnas. This is not a species but a family, with four extant species. (There are three genera, but one of them is known only from fossils.)

The echidnas are not true anteaters, although they do eat ants and termites. They live in Australia and New Guinea, while anteaters are native to South and Central America (sometimes found as far north as southern Mexico).
